Breast screening is the medical screening of healthy women for breast cancer. It is performed to achieve an earlier cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment ensuring better outcomes for the patient. Women between the ages of 50 and 74, and younger women who are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer, are encouraged to have breast screening, also known as a mammogram, every 2-3 years.

Mammography is the process of using low-energy X-rays to examine the human breast for screening or diagnostic purposes. Screening mammograms are performed on healthy patients with no symptoms while diagnostic mammograms are performed on patients with breast symptoms, changes or any other abnormal findings.
During the procedure you will be asked to undress down to the waist. Each breast will then be compressed using a dedicated mammography unit and x-rays will be taken from several angles to get the best overall picture of your breasts. The breast screening will take approximately 15 minutes and the majority of women will only feel slight discomfort during the compression process. It’s important for the breast to remain still during the screening to ensure a clear mammogram result.
